The University Arena, nationally know as "The Pit," is among the most famous and recognizable buildings in college basketball. The Pit was constructed in a 37-foot hole on Albuquerque's Southeast mesa in 1966. The arena was expanded in 1975, and now has a seating capacity of over 18,000. Often filled to capacity by the die-hard Lobos fans, the Pit seems to offer an incredible home-court advantage to the Lobos: UNM has won over 80% of the games played in the Pit! In addition to being the home court for both men's and women's teams at UNM, the Pit also hosts many of the high school state tournament games, and is drafted every May as the locations for loads of high school graduations.
